The subject of genetics and genetic data can be very overwhelming. It can also be scary and bring up the following questions:

  • Is it safe to give my DNA to a commercial company?
  • How do I know this won’t be a waste of money?
  • If I do this, am I guaranteed to get better?

I’ll address these questions below, but for those that are ready to order, here are the steps:

If you would like to order a commercial DNA test, here are the steps:

  1. Create an account on ancestry.com and purchase the AncestryDNA test for $99. This is all you need, though they do offer other options.
  2. You will receive a saliva test kit in the mail. Once you mail that back to them, your DNA results will be ready within 6-8 weeks, possibly sooner.
  3. Once your results are ready, you can download the raw DNA results as a text file. You will then have to upload that text file and have it processed into a report.
  4. The report that I recommend is the Strategene Report (currently $95). The reason I recommend this particular report is that it is high quality and it integrates very nicely with the book Dirty Genes by Dr. Ben Lynch. The report is produced by his company.

When looking to get genetic testing done, there are two options available:

  • Getting tested through your primary care physician (PCP)
  • Getting tested through a commercial service

For the clients that I work with, I recommend going with the commercial option. The reason for this is that there is a comprehensive test and report that costs $180 + tax. The process provides a comprehensive review of more than 80 genes SNPs (pronounced Snips). This particular report provide the best value, by far, that I’ve been able to find.

There are significant privacy issues involved however. I will address how to mitigate these below.

Once this report has been generated, then we have a plethora of genetic information to look at and determine what genetic factors may be critical to your accutane recovery.
